How Long Does It Actually Take?
The work is quicker than most people expect. The part worth planning around is the hour afterwards that only applies to some jobs.
The short answer
- Chip repair: about 30 minutes, drive immediately.
- Door or side window: about an hour, drive immediately.
- Rear glass: about an hour to ninety minutes, drive immediately.
- Windshield: about an hour of work, plus roughly an hour of adhesive cure before the car is safe to drive.
Add time if your vehicle needs ADAS calibration after a windshield. Ask when you book, because that is the number that changes your afternoon.
Why the windshield has a wait and the others do not
This is the single most useful thing to understand about auto glass timing.
A windshield is bonded to the body with urethane adhesive, and it is a structural component. It contributes to the roof strength in a rollover and it is what the passenger airbag deploys against. That adhesive has to reach a specified strength before the car is safe to drive, and that is what safe drive-away time means.
A door window is mechanical. It sits in a channel, held by the regulator hardware, with no structural adhesive involved. When the glass is in and tested through its travel, the job is finished.
Rear glass varies by vehicle. Many are bonded like a windshield but are not structural in the same way, so drive-away is usually immediate. We will tell you which yours is.
What safe drive-away time really means
It is not a guess and it is not the same every day. The adhesive manufacturer publishes a cure schedule, and the actual time depends on temperature and humidity.
Central Florida is generally favourable here. Warm, humid air cures urethane faster than cold dry air, so our conditions work in your favour most of the year.
Two things worth doing in that first day regardless:
- Leave a window cracked slightly for the first day. It stops a pressure spike when a door shuts, which is the main thing that can disturb a fresh bond.
- Skip the car wash for a couple of days, particularly a high-pressure one.
Anyone who tells you a windshield is ready the instant it is fitted is not giving you the real answer.
What makes a job run long
The glass going in is the predictable part. These are the variables.
- ADAS calibration. If your vehicle has a camera behind the windshield, calibration is part of the job, and it adds meaningful time. It is also not optional.
- Rust at the pinch weld. Found when the old windshield comes out. Bonding new glass over corrosion is how leaks and failures happen, so it has to be dealt with rather than covered up.
- Trim and clips. Some vehicles are simply more involved. Certain trucks and SUVs have moulding that takes real time to remove without damage.
- Vacuuming a shattered side window. Tempered glass fills the door shell with thousands of pebbles. Getting them out properly is part of the job and it is not quick.
- Weather. Urethane needs a dry, stable environment. Heavy rain moves a mobile windshield appointment.
Planning it around your day
Because we come to you, the realistic question is how long the car needs to be parked, not how long you sit in a waiting room.
At the office: ideal for a windshield. The work happens while you are inside, the cure time passes while you are still inside, and the car is ready when you are.
At home: equally fine, and the better option if you want to be around while the work is done.
Side window before a trip: no cure time, so an hour is genuinely an hour.

Can I drive immediately after a windshield replacement?
No. The urethane adhesive needs to reach safe drive-away strength first, typically about an hour in Central Florida conditions. Your installer should tell you the specific time for the adhesive used on your car that day.
Do I need to be there the whole time?
No. You need to let us into the vehicle and be reachable. Most people carry on with their day at home or at work while the job happens in the driveway or the car park.
How soon can you come out?
Often the same day, depending on where you are in Central Florida and whether the correct glass for your vehicle is in stock. Unusual specifications, such as a heads-up display windshield on a low-volume trim, may need ordering. Call 407-388-4718 and we will tell you straight away.
