A Rock Just Hit Your Windshield on the Highway
The next few hours decide whether this is a twenty-minute repair or a new windshield. Here is what actually matters.
The short answer
Do not press on it, do not run the defroster or the air conditioning straight at it, and get it looked at within a day or two. A fresh chip is often repairable. A chip that has been through a couple of Florida temperature swings has usually run into a crack, and a crack across your view means replacement.
If it is already a long crack, that decision is made. Call 407-388-4718 and we will come to you.
Why I-4 does this so often
Central Florida runs an unusual amount of construction traffic, and the stretch of I-4 through Orlando has been under work in one form or another for years. Dump trucks, aggregate haulers and pickup beds carrying loose material all shed stones, and at seventy miles an hour a small stone carries real energy.
The Turnpike, 429 and 417 produce the same thing. So do the freshly resurfaced sections where loose chip seal has not fully bedded in yet.
Practical defence: leave more following distance behind anything carrying loose material, and move out from directly behind a dump truck rather than sitting in its spray line. Most highway chips come from the vehicle directly ahead.
What decides repairable or not
Four things, and only one of them is about how bad it looks.
- Size. A chip up to roughly the size of a quarter, or a crack under about six inches, is usually repairable.
- Location. Damage in the driver's direct line of sight is normally replaced rather than repaired, because a repair leaves a small visible distortion and that is not acceptable in your primary field of view. Damage right at the edge of the glass is also usually a replacement, because the edge is where the structural bond lives.
- Depth. If the damage has gone through the outer layer into the plastic interlayer, repair will not restore it.
- How long it has been there. Dirt and water work into a chip. A clean fresh break takes resin properly; a chip that has been collecting road grime for three weeks does not bond as well.
The things that turn a chip into a crack
Almost all of them are temperature, which is why this matters more in Florida than in most places.
Blasting the air conditioning at hot glass. A car that has sat in a car park all afternoon has a windshield well over a hundred degrees. Cold air straight onto that, straight onto a chip, is thermal shock. Start with the vents pointed away and let the cabin come down gradually.
The defroster on cold glass, in reverse. Less common here but the same mechanism.
Slamming doors with the windows up. Pressure spike in a sealed cabin, flexing the glass. Crack a window first.
Potholes and speed bumps. Body flex transfers into the glass. Not much you can do beyond taking them gently.
Pressing on it to see how deep it is. Genuinely, people do this. Do not.
Cover the chip with a piece of clear tape to keep dirt and water out until it is looked at. That is the only useful thing to do to it yourself.
The Florida rule that makes this easy
Florida Statute 627.7288 requires insurers to waive the comprehensive deductible on windshield damage. If you carry comprehensive, a chip repair or a windshield replacement typically costs you nothing out of pocket.
That is worth knowing because the main reason people leave a chip is not wanting to pay for it, and in Florida that reason usually does not apply. It is also the reason not to wait: the repair is free, and so is the replacement, but a repair keeps your factory glass and factory seal, which is the better outcome.
Note the limit: the waiver is windshield-only. Side and rear glass carry your normal deductible.
What happens when you call
Send a photo if you can, taken square on rather than at an angle, with something for scale next to it. A coin works well. From that we can usually tell you repair or replace before we are anywhere near your car.
Then we come to you, at home or at work, anywhere in Central Florida. A repair is roughly half an hour. A replacement takes longer and needs about an hour of adhesive cure before the car is safe to drive, which is worth planning around if you are at the office.

How long can I leave a windshield chip before it spreads?
There is no reliable number. Some chips sit for months and some run overnight after one hot afternoon and a cold air conditioning blast. In Florida the temperature swings work against you, so treat a week as the outside limit if you want the repair option to still be available.
Is a repaired chip visible afterwards?
Usually slightly, as a small clear blemish where the resin filled the break. It is far less noticeable than the original chip, and it restores strength and stops the damage spreading. That residual visibility is exactly why damage in your direct line of sight gets replaced rather than repaired.
Can I use a DIY windshield repair kit?
They exist and they sometimes work on very small, very fresh chips. The failure mode is that a poorly done repair fills the break with resin that did not bond, and the damage can no longer be properly repaired afterwards. In Florida, where insurance usually covers the repair at no cost to you, there is little upside to the risk.
