Why a Side Window Shatters and a Windshield Just Cracks

Two kinds of glass, doing two different jobs. Once you know which is which, most of the confusing things about auto glass stop being confusing.

The short answer

Your windshield is laminated: two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer, so it cracks but holds together. Most side and rear windows are tempered: heat-treated single-pane glass that shatters into thousands of small blunt pieces. That is deliberate in both cases, and it is why a windshield chip can often be repaired while a broken side window always means new glass.

What laminated glass is doing

A windshield is a sandwich. Glass, a thin layer of plastic, glass. When something hits it, the outer layer can crack while the interlayer holds every fragment in place.

That matters for two reasons beyond the obvious. The windshield is a structural part of the roof's strength in a rollover, and it is the backstop the passenger airbag inflates against. Neither job works with glass that has fallen out of the frame, which is why a laminated windshield is designed to stay put even when broken.

It is also why a chip can be repaired. The damage is confined to the outer layer, so resin injected into the break restores strength and stops it spreading.

What tempered glass is doing

A tempered side window is a single pane that has been heated and cooled rapidly, putting the surface under compression and the core under tension. That makes it far stronger than ordinary glass of the same thickness.

But it stores that stress. Break through the surface and the whole pane releases at once, which is why it does not crack, it disintegrates. The upside is the pieces: small, roughly cube-shaped and blunt rather than the long blades ordinary glass produces.

That is the safety design. In a crash beside a window, you want pebbles rather than shards, and you want an exit.

Why this decides whether it can be repaired

People ask whether a cracked side window can be repaired. It cannot, and it is not a matter of cost or effort.

There is no partial damage to repair. A tempered pane is either intact or it is in thousands of pieces. Even in the rare case where one is chipped but has not let go yet, the stress balance is already compromised and it will fail, usually at the least convenient moment.

A windshield is the opposite. The damage really is local, the interlayer holds everything together, and there is something to fill. A chip up to about the size of a quarter, or a crack under roughly six inches, is often repairable if it is not in your direct line of sight or at the edge.

The exceptions worth knowing

The tidy rule has a few edges.

• Some newer vehicles use laminated side glass, usually on front doors, for quieter cabins and better security. If yours does, a break looks more like a cracked windshield than a pile of pebbles.
• Rear glass is usually tempered, which is why a rear screen goes all at once and fills the boot.
• Quarter glass and vent glass are typically tempered too, and often more expensive than their size suggests because they are low-volume shapes.

• Windshield chip or short crack: possibly repairable. Get it looked at quickly, because a repairable chip becomes a replacement once it runs.
• Windshield crack across your view or at the edge: replacement.
• Side or rear window in pieces: replacement, always, and the pieces need vacuuming out of the door shell or the boot.
