Rear Defroster Stopped Working After the Glass Was Replaced

Almost always one of three things, and two of them are the installer's responsibility. Here is how to work out which you are looking at.

The short answer

If the defroster worked before the glass was replaced and not after, the usual cause is a connector tab that did not get reattached or did not bond properly. The grid is printed onto the new glass, and two small tabs at the sides carry power to it. If one is loose, the whole grid does nothing. That is a workmanship issue, and whoever fitted the glass should come back and fix it.

If we fitted it, call 407-388-4718 and we will.

How the grid actually works

Those thin horizontal lines are not wires stuck to the glass. They are a conductive silver-bearing paste printed onto the inside surface and fired in when the glass is made. Current enters through a tab on one side, runs through every line, and exits through a tab on the other.

Because the lines are in series across a shared bus, one interruption in the wrong place takes out far more than one line. And because both tabs are part of the circuit, a single failed tab means nothing works at all.

Telling the three causes apart

Switch the defroster on, give it four or five minutes on a cold or damp morning, and look at where the glass clears.

One more possibility worth ruling out first, because it costs nothing: check the fuse. If the glass job also disturbed trim near the wiring, a fuse is not impossible.

Why the tabs come loose

The tab is bonded to the glass with a conductive adhesive. It has to carry current and survive heat cycling, vibration and a rear hatch being slammed for years.

The two ways it goes wrong on a fresh install are rushing the bond, and putting load on it too early. Reconnecting the harness before the adhesive has properly set, or letting the connector hang so its weight pulls on the tab, will both do it. So will using ordinary glue, which does not conduct, or soldering, which can crack the glass with thermal shock.

None of that is the customer's fault, which is why it is a warranty call rather than a new job.

What a proper rear glass job includes

Worth knowing so you can ask.

We test all of it on the day. If something is missed, it is covered by the lifetime warranty on the installation.

Can a broken grid line be repaired?

On an otherwise good piece of glass, yes. Conductive paint kits bridge a small break reasonably well, and it is a legitimate fix for one or two damaged lines on glass that is staying in the car.

Two honest limits. Repairs are visible up close, and they do not last as well as the original printed line. And if many lines are damaged or flaking, patching each one is a losing battle and replacing the glass is the straightforward answer.

If the glass is new and the grid is not working, do not start with a repair kit. Get the installer back first.

Frequently asked questions

Is a dead defroster after a glass replacement covered by warranty?

It should be, because it is workmanship rather than wear. Our installations carry a lifetime warranty, and a defroster that was working before and is not after is exactly what that covers. Call 407-388-4718 and we will come back to the car.

How long should I wait before using the defroster on new rear glass?

Ask the installer for your specific vehicle, because it depends on the adhesive used that day. As a general habit, give new glass the first day before running the defroster hard, and avoid scraping the inside of the glass at any point in its life.

Will a broken defroster fail a Florida inspection?

Florida does not require periodic safety inspections for most private vehicles, so a defroster fault is not an inspection problem here. It is still worth fixing: it clears condensation and rain haze, which is a visibility issue on humid mornings.
